The American softball saga commenced on Thanksgiving Day, 1887, in Chicago – a moment that forever etched its place in history as the sport’s birth. The sport originated at the Farragut Boat Club, spurred by the wait for the results of the Harvard-Yale football game. George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, playfully threw a boxing glove at a Harvard alum, sparking the genesis of the sport we know and love today.
Hancock, now recognized as the inventor of softball, fashioned the first softball and a reduced-size bat within a week. By 1889, Hancock’s first rule book for the Farragut Club set the game’s official standards, accelerating its adoption beyond the club. The sport’s legacy and championship rings continue to thrive, honoring players’ skills and dedication while uniting communities nationwide.
